The Gillaroo Project- Show & Tell Morning in the Gillaroo Centre

The Gillaroo Project would like to invite you to a show & tell morning in the Gillaroo Centre on Friday the 18th May from 10:15am – 12:15pm. Pupils from St. Martin’s Primary School Garrison, Belleek Controlled Primary School, Ballaghameehan Primary School Rossinver and Kiltyclogher Primary School will be presenting and displaying their local history research projects. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome. This project is being funded by the International Fund for Ireland with the support of Leitrim Development Company and Leitrim County Council.

COLIN GRIFFIN ACHIEVES OLYMPIC QUALIFICATION

Colin Griffin put up one of the best performances in his career when he took 15th position in the 50K Race at the World Cup of Racewalking in Saransk, Russia, this morning and achieved the “A” Standard which will permit him to be selected to represent Ireland in the Olympic Games in London on Saturday August 11th. His finishing time was three hours, fifty two minutes and fifty five seconds, well inside the required 3:59.00.

In the Womens’ 20K event held in increasing hotter conditions later in the day Laura Reynolds finished 35th in one hour thirty seven minutes and six seconds. This is the third time Laura has achieved the “B” Standard but as Olive Loughnane, who finished eighth today in 1:31.32, already has the “A” Standard it would not be possible to send Laura without her also achieving the “A” Standard of 1.33.30.

South Leitrim Community Health Forum

South Leitrim Community Health Forum was set up following a community needs assessment, carried out by the HSE and Leitrim Development Company, working in partnership. The Community Health Forum aims to address and influence health inequalities in service delivery, and develop health promoting initiatives and opportunities in the South Leitrim area, through community participation on the South Leitrim Community Health Forum, South Leitrim Primary Care Team and other appropriate forums. The current members of the community health forum are Des McHugh (chair) ,Ita Flynn, Helen Faughan, Betty McDermott ,Breege Grimes ,Sylvia Dolan, Michael McGovern (primary care team rep), Mary McKiernan (primary care team rep), Sean Reynolds (primary care team rep).

The South Leitrim Primary Care Team (PCT) consists of health and social care professionals based in and around Ballinamore, Carrigallen and Mohill. The PCT was first established in 2007 as part of the HSE’s Primary Care Strategy: the PCT promotes better joint working between GPs and HSE staff, ensuring the delivery of services is as close as possible to the person’s own home.

The Primary Care Team consists of GPs in Ballinamore, Carrigallen and Mohill, Nurses, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, a Home Support Co-ordinator, a Social Worker, a Community Dietitian, a Clinical Psychologist, a Community Mental Health Nurse and also support from other Health Professionals such as Speech & Language Therapy, Disability Services and Child and Family Services. The South Leitrim Primary Care Team also has three representatives from the local communities as members of the team, who are also members of the community health forum (see above).

Paul Clements is a writer, journalist and tutor. He spent 27 years working for the BBC in Belfast and London before leaping into the freelance world in 2007. He has written two travel books about Ireland, The Height of Nonsense: The Ultimate Irish Road Trip (2005) and Irish Shores: A Journey Round the Rim of Ireland (1993).
A contributing editor to two renowned travel guidebooks: Insight and Fodor’s, he has researched and written essays for Insight Guide Ireland (2008) specializing on the west coast, and on the midlands, northwest and Northern Ireland for Fodor’s Ireland (2009). He has written widely about the writer and historian Jan Morris and his work includes a critical study published in 1998, and a Festschrift, Jan Morris, Around the World in Eighty Years, published in 2006 in honour of her 80th birthday.
Paul’s work has appeared in the Irish Times, Irish Examiner, Escape, the Guardian, Times Literary Supplement, The Observer, Planet, the Welsh Internationalist, Verbal Arts, and The Irish Book Review.
Paul lives in Belfast and spends part of each year in the west of Ireland researching, writing, climbing hills, and squeezing in a pint or two. More recently, he has been a frequent visitor to France where he is attracted, not only by the wine, but to the cultural history and enjoying what the French call la douceurde vivre better known perhaps under its Italian equivalent la dolce vita.
He is a Fellow of Green-Templeton College, Oxford, and a member of the National Union of Journalists, the Society of Authors, and the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland.
